“Stop crying!” – 3 common mistakes when your child cries
Your child is crying, and almost without thinking we reach for one of three things. “Stop crying.” “Here, take the phone, just be quiet.” Or we raise our voice: “I said enough crying!”
We all do it, again and again. But the most important thing to remember is this: crying is how a child expresses what they feel.
Mistake 1: “Stop crying”
It teaches the child that their feelings aren’t acceptable.
The result: a child who keeps everything inside.
Mistake 2: Handing over the phone to quiet them
The result: a child who runs away from problems instead of trying to solve them.
Mistake 3: Shouting and yelling
The result: stress on the child’s nervous system with every problem they face.
What helps instead
Our job is to help our children learn to calm themselves down, understand their feelings, and deal with them in a healthy way.
